Abstract

Objective: Coeliac disease is a chronic and inflammatory disease of the upper small intestine resulting from faulty gluten ingestion in genetically susceptible individuals. There is no sufficient data about the psychiatric symptoms and quality of life In women with coeliac disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the quality of life in women with coeliac disease.
Methods: Sixty women who they aren’n in the premenstural period participated the study.Thirty women with coeliac disease and 30 healthy controls were included in the study. Beck Depression Scale, Beck Hopelessness Scale were performed. Chi square,Mann Whitney U test and t-test were used for statistical evaluations.
Results: Of the women with coeliac disease, the mean age was 24.2 +5.2. There were no statistically significant difference in the mean scores of Beck Depression Scale between the study group and healthy controls. But there were found statistically significantly different in the mean scores of Beck Hopelessness Scale between the study group and healthy controls. 30% of women with coelac disease took psychological support and detected that these women have some disease apart from coelac disease, too. There were no statistically significant difference in the mean scores of Body Mass Index between the study group and healthy controls. Observed that mensturation starting age of women with disease higher than healthy control group. This observation found statistically significant.
Conclusions: In this study, no difference was found in depression and hopelessness levels women with coeliac disease and healthy controls. However, coeliac disease has a negative effect on the quality of life and this might be related to dietary treatment.
